How to improve access to content

Mobile App Accessibility

Smartphones are hard wired to comply with accessibility standards in order to meet the needs of as wide an audience as possible.

Mobile app developers need to follow functionality guidelines in order to not interfere with the smartphone out of the box accessibility features.

Standard UI controls, objects, and elements should be used by developers to ensure a greater level of accessibility. For example in iOS, developer can assign Voiceover traits to content to deliver high levels of accessibility. VoiceOver is a screen reader that interacts with content in apps so users can drive the interface even if they can’t see it.

Website Accessibility

As for the Websites/CMS’s, accessibility functionality will not only be provided by using standards in web development but also by the ATbar (https://www.atbar.org) plugin that was built to make it easy for developers to build high levels of accessibility into any website.

In the ATbar team own words ‘ATbar can increase the accessibility of a website and offer a personalised user experience’.

ATbar allows users to change the look and feel of webpages, increase and decrease font sizes, have text read aloud, use coloured overlays, readability and a dictionary to aid reading.
